NOTD: Barry M Gelly in Watermelon & No7 Starshower

This was a NOTD I found languishing in my many draft posts. I decided against posting it as I was left feeling a little underwhelmed with my first roll of the dice with Barry M's Gelly polish. In hindsight I think my expectations were just a bit inflated and I did love this manicure combination. 

Watermelon was a bit tricky to apply and didn't look as glossy as I was expecting but I've since tried two or three other polishes from this range which do look very glossy so perhaps this is just a bit of a dud in that regard. The shade is something I've struggled to find elsewhere; it's darker and more green than a teal but it's not super green either. I think it would suit most people and it doesn't look too outlandish. The wear time on this polish wasn't great either; it chipped within a couple of days. At under £4 it wasn't a bad buy but if you already have a similar shade, I wouldn't be rushing out to pick this up. It does make a nice pedicure colour too - that's what I've got on just now.

Starshower was a random purchase but I've grown quite fond of it both as a general manicure colour and as an accent nail against deeper jewel type tones. I like it especially next to Watermelon because I feel that it 'lifts' it a bit. Application and wear time with this polish are both much better. No7 polishes were never a product I rated previously but I picked this up for £3 with a voucher so it's definitely worth a look!

Real Techniques: Expert Face brush vs Buffing brush

When Sam Chapman of Pixiwoo fame joined forces with Real Techniques to create a brush line, it instantly took the beauty world by storm. They're good quality, accessible, cruelty free and most importantly, affordable. During the past couple of years I've tried out the majority of brushes from the line and until very recently was of the opinion that the Buffing brush was my absolute favourite. Then I discovered the Expert Face brush and the battle for my brush-loving heart was well and truly on.

Real Techniques brush comparison

The Buffing brush has a lot going for it. It has a nice lightweight handle and soft bristles which are fairly densely packed. The top of the brush is slightly domed. I use this for blending in concealer on large areas, foundation and cream blushes. When applying foundation it can be used in a stippling fashion to get a bit more coverage or in a buffing motion to blend the foundation seamlessly into the skin. The main downside to the Buffing brush is that it's only available in the Core Collection of brushes which costs £21.99. I wasn't a huge fan of the other three brushes in the set. Had I found a use for the other three brushes, this would be a great value set but unfortunately that wasn't the case.

The Expert Face brush has a more ergonomic shaped handle, which I like. Initially I thought it looked a little small but I haven't found that to be an issue. The brush head is smaller and the bristles are more densely packed. I use this brush slightly differently to the Buffing brush; I tend to almost 'paint' my foundation on and then buff it in rather than using a stippling motion.I find that I get more coverage from my foundations when using this brush. I use the Expert Face brush exclusively for foundation but I suppose it could be used for cream blush, contour and highlight products too. It's certainly a good size to deal with the more precise placement of contour and highlight. Aside from being a brilliant brush, the Expert Face brush is also available on its own, priced at £9.99.

The Winner?

I think it's quite clear that for me the Expert Face brush wins in terms of performance and value. That doesn't mean I'll be dismissing my Buffing brush, however. I will continue to use this for foundation and I do prefer it for concealer under my eyes as it's softer on the delicate skin. I'll also continue using it for cream blushes. If it was possible to buy both brushes separately, I'd still want to own both.

MAC Creme in Your Coffee Lipstick

The Lipstick

MAC Creme in Your Coffee is described as a 'creamy mid-tone pink brown' with a cremesheen finish. The shade is a tiny bit more brown than pink in my opinion which puts it firmly in the 'nude' category for me. It's darker than most of my other nudes and is a bit more cool-toned than my preferred peachy or tan nudes. It's a refreshing change, though and I think it will work well with a variety of eye and cheek colours. It reminds me a little bit of MAC Viva Glam V but without the shimmer.

The pigmentation is great and the product applies fairly easily. It's one of those lipsticks you don't (really) need a mirror to apply. I usually like cremesheen finishes but my main gripe with them has always been that they can be a bit too creamy; lipstick ending up half way down your chin is not a good look. Creme in Your Coffee is different, it seems. The texture is a little less creamy so more difficult to over-do. It wears much longer too; I get about 3-4 hours of wear which is pretty good for me as I'm constantly talking...

The packaging is the standard MAC lipstick bullet and the scent is the delicious (but somewhat sickening, I suppose) vanilla cake batter scent that we all associate with a MAC lipstick. 

Who will like it?

Creme in Your Coffee is such a neutral shade; it pulls more pink on cooler skintones and more nude-brown on warmer skintones. For that reason I'd say it would suit anyone in the light to medium spectrum. On medium skintones it will be one of those 'my lips but better' type shades whereas on lighter skinned ladies it will look like a nice darker nude. It's a safe bet for anyone who's concerned about nude lipsticks giving them the dead-concealer-lips effect.

As this has a glossy finish, matte-lovers won't be a fan. On the plus side, if you have quite thin lips, this lipstick will make them look a little fuller. 

Anyone who's willing to spend £15 on a MAC lipstick. I just had to mention this; I remember when MAC lipsticks were around £11.50! Whilst I don't think the price is completely outrageous, it does make me a bit more cautious about which lipsticks I purchase from MAC. The drugstore has really upped its game in recent years so there is likely to be a cheaper alternative of this lipstick out there if you're willing to look around.

NOTD: Rimmel Rhythm & Blues with H&M Did I Tell You?

I stumbled upon this combination completely by accident a few weeks ago; I'd given myself a manicure with Rhythm & Blues and a different blue as an accent nail. I like how Did I Tell You? looked over the blue. I decided to try it over Rhythm & Blues and it was love! It was one of those manicures you find yourself looking at all the time. This time around I skipped the blue accent nail - it was a bit much.

The Colour

Rhythm & Blues is a gorgeous inky navy shade. The formula on this one is absolutely brilliant; it's almost opaque in one coat and it manages to wear reasonably well too. I'm a big fan of the Rimmel Salon Pro polishes in general; particularly the super on-trend shades in the Kate Moss collection. I've tried six or seven now and the formula has been great across a variety of shades. The brush is very wide and flat which is the type of brush I prefer.

The Glitter

Did I Tell You? is a blue glitter in a clear base. The glitter is made up of larger and smaller sized glitters. I've only ever needed to use one coat to get an even distribution on the nails. It looks a bit tacky in the bottle but over the right shade, it looks great. I can't remember exactly how much this cost; I think it was around £3. Overall I'm impressed by this offering from H&M.

Haul: Chanel, LUSH, MAC and some polishes!

You know that week right after payday where you start flinging money at things you don't really need? Well, I just had one of those weeks (or fortnights...)
First up, a couple of Chanel impulse buys:

I'd read some fairly good reviews on the relatively new cream blushes so after a swatching session I settled on 62 Presage. It's a bright coral shade which leans more orange than pink. I've not used this properly yet but can say my first impressions are just so-so. The packaging is much smaller than I expected and very light; it definitely doesn't feel worth the £27 price tag. The Rouge Coco lipsticks, however, have gorgeous packaging and the product itself is something I'm pretty fond of. I have one of these in Bel Respiro and love it. I went for 21 Rivoli this time which is a blood-red shade. The formula is super easy to apply, has a nice satin finish and wears for a decent amount of time. If you're not a fan of floral scent, avoid! I had lots of Beauty Club Card points so ended up paying just over £30 for both items and I got a £10 voucher back too. 

I took a wee trip home last weekend and on the way made a customary stop at the MAC counter. I really can't deal with the staff at my nearest MAC counter and I like the fact I get a bit of a discount in duty free too. I picked up a couple of lipsticks; Diva (a matte) and Creme in Your Coffee (a creamsheen). Diva is a super dark berry which I'm hoping will satisfy my berry lip requirements for now whilst Creme in Your Coffee is a gorgeous darker nude shade. It looks much less brown when it's applied and the creamsheen finish is nice and glossy.

Now that I finally live in a flat with a bath again(!) I needed to pop into LUSH to pick up my beloved The Comforter bubble bar (it had already been used by the time I got around to taking these pictures) It's a a chunk of deliciously berry scented bubbly goodness which I'm very glad to have back in my life. While I was there I picked up another favourite; the BB Seaweed fresh face mask. I've lost count of the number of times I've recommended this as it works on loads of skin types and is pretty cheap. The only downside is that you need to use it all up within a month of purchasing. I was at the till when I spotted Santa's lip scrub and despite the fact I know that these are messy, I had to have it. It smells and tastes like old school cola. Yum! 

I've been branching out a little with polishes; shimmers and glitters are no longer off the menu. Illamasqua Bacterium made its way into my ASOS shopping basket a few weeks ago (it was only a fiver, how could I say no?!) and when it arrived it went straight on my nails. This slightly odd nude shimmer lasted a full week on me without chipping which is almost a miracle so I'm sure I'll be adding to my Illamasqua polish collection sometime soon. The Barry M Gelly polishes went under my radar initially as to me 'jelly' means translucent and if there's one thing that really drives me crazy, it's a sheer polish. After having a look at the formula I've realised that it's not sheer at all - just super shiny. I've got Watermelon here which is a nice teal green. It's going on my nails in the next couple of days and I have high hopes.

My final haul item is one of those products you pick up thinking 'yeah, this could be cute'. And it is cute; In the bottle. As I said, I've developed an interest in glitter polishes recently so this candy pink packed with pink, blue and silver glitter of varying sizes looked pretty great. I knew that I'd need a few coats but after trying three or four it just wasn't working as it was still too sheer. I took it off and reapplied over a couple of coats of Essie Fiji (almost-white crème finish pink) but I still needed three coats and the effect was too patchy for my liking. The glitter looked great though so I kind of wish Revlon would have packed more of the glitter into a clear base as then it would have been much more versatile. Anyway, it's Revlon Girly if any of you aren't put off by the above!

Review: Maybelline Color Tattoo in Pink Gold

The Maybelline Color Tattoo in Pink Gold was one of those products I picked up as part of a 3 for 2 deal on a complete whim. The idea of a pink eyeshadow on paper is something which would usually fill me with dread but this pale pearlised golden pink is surprisingly flattering on my brown eyes. I suppose it fits in quite nicely with the rose gold trend which has emerged over the past couple of years however I think it's subtle enough to fall into the 'eternally chic' shade category.

I apply this product over my NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base either with my finger or a Real Techniques domed eyeshadow brush. I prefer using the brush as it deposits just the right amount of product more precisely. If I use my finger I tend to require a couple of layers to get the same amount of colour. Even without a base I find these don't crease until they reach the 7-8 hour mark - I have pretty oily lids so this is a decent wear time for me. 

All in all, I really enjoy using the Maybelline Color Tattoo shadows I've tried and Pink Gold has become my most used shade over the past six months. I wish we in the UK had access to the same colour range as the US because I've seen some gorgeous neutral shades I'd love to get my hands on.

Review: Aveda Pure Abundance Shampoo

I'm an absolute sucker for any hair products claiming to make my hair look more voluminous. I tend to be fairly low maintenance with my hair; shampoo, either a hair oil or leave in conditioner spray, dry shampoo and hairspray are the only products I really reach for. I find that mousses and cream products weigh my hair down too much so even if they claim to add volume, I end up with greasy flat hair. On that basis, volumising shampoos tend to be what I opt for most. I've tried a few across a range of high street brands which I've enjoyed but whilst perusing the Aveda counter in Debenhams I was drawn in by the Pure Abundance line and decided to give the shampoo a go.

The packaging is plain and functional although I did have to store it upside down to get the remaining product out when it was running low. The product itself is a honey coloured gel with a normal 'shampoo' texture - it's not too runny or exceptionally thick. The scent is quite herbal and overpowering; I didn't pick up the jasmine in the scent (I love jasmine!)

Aveda state that the shampoo:

Lifts fine hair up and fills it out. Hair looks fuller, feels thicker, stays more abundant. 

•	plant-based formula boosted by certified organic acacia gum
•	Aroma with jasmine, certified organic peppermint, palmarosa and ylang ylang

I used the shampoo as normal and spritzed a little leave in conditioner on the ends of my hair. When it was 80% dry, I blow dried it. I did find that my hair felt lighter and had a nice amount of volume once I'd dried it and my hair did feel cleaner for a little longer when I used this shampoo. However, I have quite a sensitive scalp and this shampoo would sometimes be a little irritating so I couldn't use it on a daily basis. 

The bottom line is that I liked the product, I just didn't love it. It did give my hair a bit of extra volume without that product build up feeling so if you've not got a sensitive scalp and you fancy trying a higher end volumisng shampoo, I'd say that this is worth a try. I won't be repurchasing it as I've found the volumising shampoos from Herbal Essences and Aussie are fairly similar in terms of performance, are a fraction of the price and they smell nicer.

Budget Beauty Essential: Boots Extra Large Cotton Wool Pads

I first heard about these super sized cotton pads from Boots in a Zoella video, I believe. At the time I was using a cream cleanser, separate eye make up remover and toner so I was going through 6-8 regular cotton pads every time I removed my make up. At £2.59 for 60 these may seem a bit pricey for cotton pads but I think they're well worth it.

If you've ever been a fan of those dreaded drying face wipes (we've all been there...I still keep some on hand for emergencies!) because they're so quick and easy to use, these cotton pads, a good quality cleanser and toner make an excellent alternative. I typically massage my cleanser into my skin to lift the make up and remove with one of the pads. The process is much quicker as I only need one pad unless I need to double cleanse to remove lots of make up.

I also use them to remove polish - one pad will do nails and toes.

You'll find these in the baby section rather than in the beauty section and they're currently in a buy one, get one half price offer. I've only got a few pads left so am planning on stocking up this weekend!

Weekend Haul: Philosophy & Boots

Hello!

I've finally done a little bit of beauty shopping! This haul is probably going to seem tiny compared to the monthly hauls I used to post but I'm sort of pleased about that. I generally try to be cleverer about the purchases I'm making now so will usually only buy one or two products over a period of a few weeks. This week I allowed myself to go a tiny bit crazy at the Philosophy counter and in Boots. I say 'crazy' because I don't actually need any of these things but that's not to say I won't enjoy trying them out; there could be some new favourites in here!

Philosophy as a brand is still fairly new to me. I've tried a lot of samples (and received even more after making this purchase - check out the cute little 'mini miracles' bag they came in!) and generally liked everything so I've been keen to pick up more of their line for a while. The 3-in-1 shampoo, shower gel and bubble bath is one of the brand's staple offerings; I went for the delicious citrus scented Señorita Margarita. At £14 it's pretty pricey for a basic shower gel but I've been trying this out and a little definitely goes a long way. I tried it in my hair too and liked it as a shampoo but my hair is ridiculously low maintenance so I wouldn't recommend this as a shampoo for all hair types. 

The second product I picked up is their primer: The Present. I've heard mixed reviews on this one and haven't tried it out myself yet but plan to this week so expect to see a review soon if I have especially strong feelings either way. This was £22 but you do get 60ml of product which is around twice the size of most standard primers from other brands. 

Then I had one of those trips 'I-want-everything' trips to Boots but I somehow managed to compose myself and not spend too much. Looking at it now it does seem like a random selection of products! 

I made a couple of repurchases from Rimmel; the Wake Me Up concealer has been a favourite of mine for a long time and another lipstick from Kate Moss's Lasting Finish range. I got the shade 05 which is a warm, slightly bright pink because I've misplaced my beloved shade 19 and I'm hoping to find it again soon! I got a free Scandal Eyes mascara in black which I'm not sure I'll be a fan of as the brush looks absolutely huge.

The next three products which swiftly made it into my basket are all things I was really excited to see because until now I've not spotted them in British drugstores. The Maybelline Mega Plush mascara came out in the States forever ago and I've been dying to try it. This is another product which appears to split the opinion of beauty addicts so I'm interested to see which camp I end up in. I imagine there'll be a review of this up fairly soon. Next up is a Sally Hansen Salon Manicure polish in the infamous shade: Commander in Chic. It's one of those griege-nudes that's been doing the rounds for the past two or three years but I'm still looking forward to trying it out. I also came across a Sinful Colors display with a wide array of shades which are a snip at £1.99. I've been hankering after green nail polishes recently so this one in Exotic Green is a good way to try it out on the cheap.

Finally, I need new skincare. My current skincare system is driving me crazy; largely because it's not really a system. I'm starting my mini-revolution with this Vichy Normaderm moisturiser because it claims to target the issues I've been having with my skin. I also need a new cleanser, toner, serum, exfoliator and mask...suggestions on a postcard (or in the comments, probably quicker), please!

E.L.F. Angled Blush Brush

Say hello to one of my new favourite brushes! This is the Angled Blush Brush from E.L.F.'s Studio range and I've been using it for about three months now. Its name would suggest that I've been using it for blush but the densely packed bristles and thinner shape mean it's a rubbish blush brush. However, it's excellent for foundation. 

As with all E.L.F. Studio brushes this one has a matte black handle and a black metal ferule with black bristles. Pretty sleek looking for £3.75, I reckon. I was expecting something similar to my beloved MAC 168 in terms of shape and density so was a tiny bit disappointed when I first got my hand on this. It languished in my brush collection for about a month until I realised that it might be great for foundation. 

It turns out that I was right; it's totally a foundation brush. It's similar to one of those traditional foundation brushes which make me feel like I'm painting my face but it's a bit fatter and the angle makes it great for getting into areas under the eyes and around the nose. I use it to blend concealer in under my eyes and on any other blemishes before dotting some foundation on my skin and blending it in. Right now I'll happily reach for this in place of my Real Techniques Buffing brush or Illamasqua Highlight brush which have both been long-time favourites of mine. 

My only issue with this brush is the fact that after about two uses I could tell that the ferule was getting loose. It hasn't fallen apart yet but every time I use it I think it's going to! I don't mind so much because it was so inexpensive but the inconsistency in quality of E.L.F. products is very frustrating. Thankfully it doesn't shed!

LUSH Love Lettuce Fresh Face Mask

I can always rely on LUSH for a pick-me-up when my skin is feeling a bit 'blah'. I meant to review this fresh face mask about two months ago but since I plan on picking up a new tub of the stuff this week, I thought it'd still be okay to rave about it today!

Love Lettuce is a face mask that I've avoided because I preferred less abrasive options such as BB Seaweed and Catastrophe Cosmetic. I liked using my own microdermabrastion exfoliator and then a mask but this one changed my mind because the ground almond shells aren't too harsh. Love Lettuce left my skin feeling clean, smooth, refreshed and soothed all at once! No mean feat for one little pot of gritty green goo, really. It's got something to do with seaweed, honey, almond oil and lavender, apparently. 

This and BB Seaweed are the two best 'all rounder' masks that I'd recommend to almost anyone. If you've got very sensitive skin I'd tell you to opt for BB Seaweed instead, though. 

I get six or seven uses out of these pots so I tend to use them twice a week before they go past their best before date. Make sure you remember to keep these in your fridge to keep them fresh!

NOTD: Collection Hot Looks in 62 Dusk

Hello!

Once again, it's been a while! I've been pretty busy so sadly my wee blog has been neglected. In fact, so has a lot of my beauty regime and my skin is really starting to notice so I'm on a mission to get back on track. Any suggestions of great skincare ranges will be much appreciated! I'm thinking of giving Elemis a go if any of you have any thoughts on that brand.

Despite my low-key approach to skincare and make up, I've been maintaining some sort of effort with my nails (chipped nail polish will always drive me nuts!) I've been experimenting with lots of different drugstore brands and so far have found some absolute gems. First up is this Collection Hot Looks polish in the shade Dusk. 

It's a very dark green with a crème finish; not especially fitting for the season really! I bought it because under the lights in Boots it looked like a bottle green but in any sort of normal lighting it's more like an evergreen shade. I was slightly disappointed about that but it's a nice dark shade nonetheless. It's a bit different from black, dark reds and dark purples. 

The application of this polish was fairly easy. The brush isn't the widest in the world and the straight edge makes it a bit trickier around the cuticle area. The small cap was also a tiny bit fiddly so I did have a bit of cleaning up to do afterwards with this one. I only needed two coats for an opaque finish; I could have almost got away with just one if I'd taken my time! In my opinion, that's pretty good for a dark shade like this. The finish is a tiny bit matte which I don't particularly like. Nothing a slick of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri top coat can't fix, though. 

One of the best things about this polish is the price. It costs a mere £1.99! If another shade catches my eye I'll definitely be picking it up. It contains 8ml which is slightly smaller than the average drugstore nail polish (and just over half the size of an OPI polish) but who ever uses an entire bottle of nail polish before it becomes too gloopy to use?

Beauty Shopping List: February

Recently I've been hankering after a bright pink blush and NARS Desire is right at the top of my list. I've never been disappointed by a NARS blush so I expect great things from this one. The Tom Ford Black Orchid fragrance has been on my wish list for some time; I'm determined to pick it up this month! It's not for everyone but I think it smells sexy as hell. Another fragrance-related product I need (okay, want) to purchase in February is a Yankee candle in Clean Cotton. I've been through several of these in the past; they make my entire flat smell fresh and lovely. Two 'staple' products on my list are the Clinique Airbrush Concealer and Illamasqua Masquara; I've not tried a new concealer or mascara for a while and after reading good reviews for both of these, they've made their way onto my shopping list.
